| SHORT HISTORY OF ST. THERESE St. Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face, better known as "The Little Flower," St. Therese of Lisieux, was born in Alencon, France in 1873. She was the youngest child of Louis and Zelie Martin, who were themselves declared "Venerable" by Pope John Paul II in 1994. All five of the Martin children who reached adulthood became nuns; four of them became Discalced Carmelites. Therese was drawn to God from a very young age. At the age of 15, she received special permission from her bishop to enter the Carmel of Lisieux. There, Therese lived a life of humility, simplicity, and childlike trust in God. By word and example, she shared this "little way of spiritual childhood" with the novices in her community. On the night between Holy Thursday and Good Friday in 1896, Therese experienced her first hemoptysis (spitting up of blood) from tuberculosis. Over the next 18 months, her condition steadily deteriorated. In the months prior to her death, she prayed for the grace to "spend my heaven doing good on earth" and promised that after her death she would send "a shower of roses" from heaven. Offering her sufferings for the salvation of souls, Therese died of tuberculosis on September 30, 1897, at the age of 24. She is known for her love of roses and is often called on to have one sent from her heavenly garden as a sign of hope. St. Thérèse's life on earth was spent in perfect love and service of Almighty God. So zealously did she dedicate every thought, word and deed to Jesus in the practice of her "Little Way" that the Holy Father has declared her "A Perfect Miniature of Holiness...The Greatest Saint of Modern Times." May St.Thérèse, whose life is a perfect pattern for imitation, abundantly fulfill in your personal behalf her divinely inspired promises "I Will spend My Heaven Doing Good Upon Earth... I Will Let Fall From Heaven A Shower Of Roses." METHOD OF PRAYING CHAPLET TO ST. THERESE Said on the Chaplet of St. Thérèse, consisting of the medal of St. Thérèse, and a large bead followed by twenty-four smaller beads. On the first bead recite this prayer: St. Thérèse of the Infant Jesus, Patroness of Missions, Pray for us! On each of the twenty-four beads, in honor of the Blessed Trinity, in thanksgiving for giving the world the little saint who lived only twenty-four years, the following is said: Glory be to the Father, and the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. The chaplet is concluded by saying the Prayer to St. Thérèse: St. Thérèse, the Little Flower, please pick me a rose from the Heavenly Garden and send it to me with a message of love. Ask God to grant me the favor I thee implore, (mention petition here) and tell Him I will love Him each day more and more. Amen. The St. Thérèse Prayer above, plus five each of the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Gloria, must be said on five successive days before 11:00AM. On the fifth day, when the fifth set of prayers has been completed, offer one more set of five each of the three prayers. |
